New homes rejected in Southwater

An application to demolish an existing building and create 13 new homes at the Copse, in Worthing Road, was submitted to Horsham District Council earlier this year.

At HDC’s Development Control North Committee, held at Parkside, on Tuesday October 3, councillors voted to support officers’ recommendations and reject the proposals .

The application outlined the creation of four two-bedroom, two three-bedroom, three four-bedroom and four five-bedroom properties with associated garages and car parking.

Officers recommended the proposals be refused over concerns the development was outside the area allocated in the Horsham District Planning Framework.

Concerns were also raised that no contribution had been outlined to support local services.

At the meeting officers noted a letter of objection from Southwater Parish Council had been received.

The parish council raised concerns about the impact on traffic flow and the affect the build would have on an air aid shelter located at the site.

John Chidlow (Con, Southwater) said: “I can see no objections to the officers’ recommendations.

“It is outside the building area and it makes no contributions to education, libraries, etcetera.”

He added that he would like to see any future applications make provisions for the historical interest that there was in the site.
