New Horsham bar aims to boost town nightlife

The Octopvs Eternal Bar, with a branch in Crawley, will join Market Square where Freeman Brothers funeral directors once stood.

But this ‘sophisticated’ venue offering a ‘sexy cocktail list’ is more than just a bar, claim owners Karen Lewis and Cristian Pierri.

The married couple believe their family-run business - first spawned in Italy - will liven up Horsham’s economy by driving in new customers from outside town, boosting custom in nearby restaurants and catering for the over 25s.

Experience gathered from the opening of their first bar in Milan back in 1995 has left the owners feeling confident and believing ‘this is exactly what Horsham needs’.

“The theme is interesting,” admits Cristian, “I wanted something to reflect my background - Roman - and remember Italy not just for pizza and the mafia.

“The thing that makes it so special is the fun everyone has when we’re working,” said Cristian. “We encourage staff to enjoy themselves and have a drink or two as well.”

Nearly ten jobs have been created in Horsham after the couple were approached to use the site last year.

The invitation was made by the building owner and follows successful years trading in neighbouring Crawley since 2007.

Strong relationships with police and the local authority have earned them a reputation to be proud of, says Cristian.

“If an establishment has problems there is absolutely no way they would release another licence to open up in another town,” he said.

The Horsham venue will be equipped with five bouncers and a full CCTV system in a bid to deter any anti-social behaviour. “Also there’s no stupid offers on drinks - which always spells trouble,” added the businessman.

Entrance to the two-bar venue will be free, along with pre-dinner aperitifs. Special offers will be available and prices will range.

Karen said: “I think the people of Horsham appreciate quality.

“We really will be hitting hard for people to come down after work and have a nice sophisticated drink.

“But the bar will be tailored to what the people of Horsham want. We’re very excited to get started,” she added.

The bar currently has a 12.30am license, but the couple say they will be ‘looking to expand’ for a later closure.

The couple hope to play a vital role in Horsham’s night-time economy and look forward to welcoming new faces into their Market Square venue in late March.
