Run by Petworth Town Council and supported by the town’s business association the monthly event replaces the market run by Chichester District Council which stopped at the end of March.

The new farmers market reclaims the Market Square with stalls in the parking bays by Lloyds Chemist, Austen’s Hardware, Wilkinson Antiques and running into the entrance of Lombard Street. They will face the pavement, ensuring they are fully integrated with the retailers.

Town council chairman Chris Kemp, said: “The decision by CDC presented us with a golden opportunity we just could not miss - working directly with independent market traders to introduce a new format. We had several meetings with market traders and after careful debate at full council it was agreed our town needs a vibrant market and we should support a group of independent traders to make it happen.”

Subject to a survey, it will be held on the fourth Saturday of every month by means of a parking suspension in the Square.
