New pay-and-display machines for Chichester city streets

The machines will complement the current voucher parking system, which sees customers paying their fee in certain specified shops and then putting vouchers on their windscreens.

West Sussex County Council has said the tariffs will stay exactly the same.

“Pay and display machines are much more convenient to use than having to rely on buying vouchers,” said cabinet member for highways and transport John O’Brien.

“It will now be obvious to people visiting Chichester what they need to do to pay for parking.”

The county council said people would be able to pay for on-street parking in cash from November 2.

Cllr O’Brien added: “Moving to pay-and-display machines will support tourism and boost the local economy.

“It will reduce congestion which results from motorists driving around the city, unsure of where to park or buy vouchers.”

The council said vouchers remained valid for customers who still wanted to use them and were available from existing outlets as before.

Machines will start appearing on Monday (October 19) but will need testing before they go live on November 2.
