New play equipment built in Westergate

Work has started on revamping the playground at Aldingbourne Community Sports Centre.

The community site at Olivers Meadow in Westergate is being improved with new equipment in a £40,000 scheme.

The items will include a cradle swing, junior swing, jungle climber, multi-play unit, basketball hoop and bouncer.

Some existing equipment is also being upgraded and refurbished.

Safety surfacing, fencing, gates, seating and bins will be installed as well.

Work is expected to be finished by September 16.

Aldingbourne Parish Council chairman Marianne West said: “The play area is an important part of village life, providing a place where children can meet up, have fun and exercise.

“The new equipment and improved existing pieces will provide challenging play facilities free of charge and will complement other on-site facilities.”

The parish council is leading the scheme with £10,000 as a developer contribution from the Lime Avenue housing development.

The Veolia Environmental Trust has also awarded a £20,000 grant through its landfill communities fund.

The balance has been paid by the parish council.

Margaret Cobbold, the trust’s executive director, said: “We support community and environmental projects across the UK.

“It is good to know this one is under way.

“I look forward to seeing the completed play area being used and enjoyed.”

The trust has been helping various initiatives for the past 12 years.

Its fund receives money from donations by landfill site operators which comprise 6.2 per cent of the landfill tax payment.
