They will be able to use the North Bersted relief road this afternoon for the first time.

The 1.8km route between Rowan Way and Chichester Road will enable motorists to avoid the previous bottlenecks along Chichester Road.

Costing some £8m, the road was approved by the government in 2006.

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “The new road will significantly reduce traffic congestion and delay on the road network at North Bersted because travel patterns will change following the opening of the new road.

“All non-local traffic, including heavy goods vehicles, will be directed to the town centre along the new route, rather than being directed along the old road network.”
