New start for landmark pub

THE York Hotel has been refurbished and renamed as it starts a new chapter in its history.

Now the Sussex Hotel, the London Road pub is aimed at an older, more family clientele with the emphasis on food rather than late night drinking.

There has been redecoration inside and a change towards comfortable seating with sofas and small screens for an intimate and relaxed atmosphere.

The pub in London Road has been open for business for several weeks but Jimmy Carroll, in his current capacity as mayor, called in to make it official.

He joined manager Peter Latham and his wife Sharon to celebrate the new beginning.

Peter said: “The venue has changed.

“It is more food oriented now.

“The York as a whole didn’t have a very good name with late night drinking and the police visiting every other weekend, but now that late night licence is gone we’re pushing it more towards food, more family.

“I think the reaction to it has been superb - and 95 per cent of people have been great.”
