New status for school

STEYNING Grammar School has become the first school in the county to be awarded vocational specialist status.

The school, which recently celebrated its most successful Ofsted inspection to date, has had specialist technology status for the past 10 years.

In September, Steyning Grammar was designated by the government a "high-performing specialist school" and was invited to apply for a second specialism.

The new status will lead to students being encouraged to see the relevance of their studies to the world of work, enabling them to widen their understanding and develop career paths.

Head teacher designate Dr John Peat said: "It is a very rare distinction to have two specialisms. It will give us a significant amount of extra money and resources to enhance our vocational curriculum for 14 to 18-year-olds."

Steyning Grammar will become the lead school for vocational education in West Sussex and is already planning the launch of a new BTEC art course in animation and illustration for year-10 students.
