New summer cycle route for Littlehampton

CYCLISTS are gearing up for their first summer being able to ride safely along Littlehampton promenade.

With the weather beginning to warm up, many residents and visitors to Littlehampton are expected to test out the new, shared seafront cycle route.

Arun District Council asked West Sussex County Council to install the shared surface in January, after requests from the public in a consultation on Arun’s seafront strategy, last year.

In a later survey, 82 per cent of people asked by the council also said they would like to be able to cycle along Littlehampton prom.

The route, which runs from the River Arun to Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre, can be used by both cyclists and pedestrians.

However, bikers will still have to have their wits about them, as pedestrians have the right of way.

A new central reservation has been installed at the swimming centre to allow pedestrians to cross safely.

The new surface also means those riding between Littlehampton and Rustington are no longer diverted along the South Terrace’s busy road.

Arun’s cabinet member for economic and cultural development, councillor Norman Dingemans, who is also in charge of tourism, said: “I’m very keen to see as many people as possible out using this new cycle route. It provides both cyclists and pedestrians with some stunning seafront views on their journeys between Littlehampton and Rustington and is a much safer way of travelling between the two places.”
