New Uckfield pitch means children can develop skills

Budding Beckhams can now develop their footie skills irrespective of the weather, said a delighted Gordon Buckland of the town’s Grasshoppers team, commenting on the opening of the town’s new all-weather pitch.

He said the Grasshoppers are now moving into a new era where FA qualified coaches can focus on helping every child develop to best of his or her ability.

He also thanked Ian Bennett for his inspiration in 1981 in forming Grasshoppers and Toni Rossi (current chairman) eventually getting to this ‘wonderful point in its history.’

Uckfield Community Technology College principal Hugh Hennebry added: “This is a world class facility and we are enormously grateful to the working group which turned this dream into reality.”

Paul Thorogood, chief cxecutive of the Football Foundation, said: “This is an outstanding new pitch, which will benefit football and other sports. Developing new grassroots facilities is essential to increasing the number of people who have a chance to stay healthy through sport. We are dedicated to improving sites nationwide with investment from partners – the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England). I congratulate AWP4U working group and the Sussex County FA for their hard work.”
