New village seathonours fallen

People in the village responded to a request from Camber Parish Council inviting them to have their say on how the occasion should be commemorated.

The request was made at the Annual Assembly of the village, held in the Memorial Hall last Tuesday.

The idea of installing a bench on which people could sit and reflect was met with support from the villagers who attended the event and the Parish Councillors voted to go ahead with this project in time for Remembrance Sunday.

The bench is now installed on Jubilee Green, faces west to mark the setting of the sun and bears a plaque inscribed with the following words - ‘In memory of local people who lost their lives in World War 1 . We will remember them. Camber Parish Council 2014’.

Parish Clerk Angela Alexander said: “The bench has been installed by Camber Parish Council for all to enjoy but Councillors hope that those using the bench will take a quiet moment to remember those who lost their lives and in whose memory the bench is provided.”

The bench is one of a number of initiatives taken up by villages and communities in the Rye and Battle area to mark the centenary.

These have ranged from renovating war memorials to the planting of poppies and the sounding of the Last Post.

Rye Mayor Cllr Bernardine Fiddimore visited war graves at Ypres along with members of the Rye Royal British Legion.

Remembrance Sunday, on November 9 will see big street processions at both Rye and Battle and services and wreath laying at many village churches.
