Excited shoppers got up early and popped down to the new supermarket in Perrymount Road, watching with glee as Mid Sussex MP Sir Nicholas Soames cut the ribbon at 7am.

The store is the biggest the national chain has opened in Sussex and is expected to be the largest it opens in the UK this year.

As well as the usual food and grocery products the store also includes a wine bar, a sushi bar and the company’s new ‘Kitchen concept’ offering breakfast, lunch and dinner options which will be freshly prepared throughout the day.

It will also play host to a cafe, fresh meat and fish counters, and services such as Waitrose Quick Check and John Lewis click-and collect.

The store will be supporting local charities through its ‘green token’ scheme and Partner Volunteering programme.
