New war memorial is dedicated in Aldwick

SERVICE veterans have dedicated Aldwick's new war memorial in a rare ceremony.

The Rev Brian Whitehead, chaplain of the Aldwick Royal British Legion, led the service.

The exhortation – ‘They shall not grow old...’ – was read by the branch’s president, Dennis Windebank.

Branch chairman Roly Bilham said: “The service dedicates the memorial to the glory of God and to honour the memory of those who it represents.

“It is unusual to have such a service because most memorials are well-established.”

The Aldwick memorial is in the millennium garden off Pryors Lane. Costing some £8,000, it is a 6ft-high limestone-clad concrete column built last month for the parish council.

Parish councillor Molly Myers said: “The memorial is much appreciated by the people of Aldwick. They wanted something local to commemorate those who had died in the wars.”
