New Worthing beach huts opposed

MORE than 20 seafront residents are opposing plans to build seven new beach huts along the West Parade promenade.

They object to losing their Channel outlook, and one wrote to Worthing Council: "I bought my flat to enjoy sea views '“ not to look into the back of garden sheds."

It's the council which wants to provide the huts.

The development control committee was recommended to approve the erection of five huts west of the existing huts west of Grand Avenue, and two huts south of Heene Road.

All the huts, to be sited behind the promenade wall, would be rented out by the council for private use.

But the committee decided to adjourn the application to enable more consultations to take place.

An officers' report to the committee said there were 159 people on the waiting list for beach huts/chalets, and people had to wait years to be offered one.

The report pointed out that the huts would be built where huts had previously been sited, and said: "It is important to distinguish between considerations of public interest which legitimately concern the planning system, and those of private interest which only concern individuals.

"The courts have ruled that protection of a view is less a matter of public interest."

An objection has also been received from Marine Point Residents' Association.
