Young people now have a new refurbished place to hang out in Hailsham after town council bosses took over a youth club.

The Eastside Youth Cafe, which operates from the Maurice Thornton Pavilion in Orion Close, was taken over by Hailsham Town Council last year.

The club, formerly the Young Farmers’ Youth Club, was run by the Town Farm Residents’ Association. It will open on Monday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm. The town council said the youth cafe will offer the same service as before, but it will employ town council staff and volunteers.

The council said the Eastside Youth Café is open to those aged 12 to 16, and adds to the existing services provided at the town council’s flagship centre, the Square Youth Café.

Richard Grocock, joint oversight councillor for Youth Projects at the town council said: “The town council is proud to have worked jointly with residents to set up the Young Farmers’ Youth Club in 2010 by providing the venue for this important project and will enjoy continued use of the Maurice Thornton Pavilion.”
