A group of suspected arsonists who are thought to have set a number of fires on the clifftop above Newhaven on Saturday August 10 are wanted for questioning by police.

Sussex Police said a group of three youths were seen running away from a caravan site after the large area of gorse was set on fire deliberately.

Officers would like to speak to the three youths, all around aged 18, who were seen getting into a blue hatchback at around 11.30am.

They drove off at the top of Court Farm Road.

Crews were called to the fire at Castle Hill Nature Reserve around 11pm and fire crews had to attend a number of other smaller fires in vegetation in the area.

At one time, the fire encroached on a nearby caravan site, but firefighters were able to bring it under control before it came too close.

Eight fire appliances were deployed to the scene while the fire was at its height.

Anyone who saw them or has any information about the fire is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 1874 of 10/08 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
