Newhaven: Fly tipping hazard to health

PEOPLE are concerned their neighbourhood is being turned into the unofficial Newhaven tip.

Residents fear a stretch of the highway between Blakeney Avenue and Charleston Avenue will become a no-go area if fly tippers continue to dump rubbish.

Heather Tait, from Charleston Avenue, said: 'Everything from gas cylinders to bedroom furniture has been dumped. It spreads across the road and attracts foxes. who rip open the bags.

'As well as the unsightly mess, residents fear the rubbish could be hazardous to children and pets

'Dogs and children could injure themselves on glass and rubbish, everybody is fuming about it and saying we are becoming Newhaven s new tip.

A spokesperson for Lewes District Council said it had proved difficult to trace to get the private owners of the land to move the rubbish.

'We have decided we will move it as the area is used by the public and is a beauty spot, she added.
