Newhaven: Folk take trip up High Street

NEWHAVEN townsfolk and councillors are calling for repairs to dangerous and unsightly paving.

Over the years repairs to the High Street have resulted in an untidy patchwork of Tarmac, bricks and slabs.

Myrtle Foard, of Mount Road, Newhaven, said: It s awful. The pavement is terrible. It is amazing someone has not had an accident. The slabs are really dangerous. It s a safety hazard.

Mrs Foard, and her husband Gerry, were so concerned they wrote to Newhaven Town Council to call for extra cash for repairs.

She said: With so much talk about the regeneration of Newhaven, surely now is the time to secure monies from some grant or other to assist with this.

We believe that the fabric of the town centre must be smartened up before new business will want to come to Newhaven.

Town councilllors agreed. Cllr Lynne Austin said Age Concern had complained that elderly people were tripping in areas where bricks were missing.

Cllr Michelle Jones said problems had been worsened by heavy delivery vans damaging the surface and Cllr Pat Fitton said taxis also added to problems.

Councillors agreed a letter should be sent to Lewes District Council and East Sussex County Council expressing the town council s concern and calling for proper repairs with heavy duty bricks.
