Newhaven Lifeboats rescue two trawlers in two days

Lifeboat crews at Newhaven RNLI rescued two stricken vessels in two days earlier this week.

Newhaven’s Severn Class lifeboat ‘RNLB David and Elizabeth Acland and her volunteer crew were launched on Tuesday, January 17 at 1.45am to a trawler which had suffered a fouled propeller, six nautical miles south of Beachy Head.

The Newhaven lifeboat arrived with the ten-metre trawler at 2.22am, and there were two people on board.

The casualty vessel was safely towed into Newhaven Harbour at 4.30am and the two trawler crew were unharmed on a cold, calm evening.

The Newhaven crew were then launched again on Wednesday, January 18 at 11.28pm to a trawler which had suffered a mechanical failure, 1.5 nautical miles south of Newhaven.

Newhaven lifeboat arrived with the 14-metre trawler at 11.38pm, which had two people on board.

Shortly afterwards a tow line was secured to the casualty vessel and the tow got underway, with the vessel safely docked at Newhaven harbour at 0.25am.

Newhaven lifeboat coxswain Paul Legendre said: “It’s very unusual to attend two casualty trawlers within a couple of days.

“Our volunteer crew did a great job assisting the vessels in the middle of the night.”
