Mr Myers’ GP, Dr Paul Moore, said that he was in contact with STAR, the substance and alcohol recovering service, and suffered with anxiety and low moods.

In September 2019 he was seen for a drug overdose, something that Joanne Wheeler from Sussex Partnership Trust said he called a ‘cry for help’.

Ms Wheeler said, “He was very honest and open about his drug use.”

However, Mr Myers was ‘really difficult’ to engage with according to Sarah Hall, a community psychiatric nurse that tried to make contact with Mr Myers on numerous occasions.

She said, “We were proactive in our help for him but he didn’t take it, he didn’t turn up to the appointments made.”

A report from STAR revealed that Mr Myers first came into contact with them 14 years ago, but he continued to use class A drugs throughout his treatment journey. The report also said that attempts were made to get in touch with him, but he often missed appointments and phone calls.

East Sussex coroner James Healy-Pratt ruled that Mr Myers’ death was drug and alcohol related.

He said, “Attempts were made to assist Mr Myers to combat his problems but he wasn’t able to conquer his dependency demons.”
