NEWHAVEN SWING BRIDGE TO CLOSE AT NIGHT FOR TWO WEEKS

The A259 Newhaven swing bridge will be closed to night time traffic from today (Monday June 19) until July 2 to allow for essential maintenance work.

The closure is needed to allow work to the structure of the bridge, including the replacement of a worn bearing at the west end.

The bridge will be closed to traffic for the following periods:

June 19 - July 1, 11.45pm - 6:am each day.

July 1 and 2, 9pm - 10am.

The diversion route will be clearly signposted. Traffic will be diverted both ways through Lewes. The diversion route for traffic traveling westward through Newhaven will be the A26, A27, Lewes and the C7. For traffic travelling eastward through Newhaven it will be the C7, Lewes, the A27 and A26.

Passengers who need to get to the ferry terminal should approach Newhaven via the A26.

Pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge during the works although access may be restricted. A temporary ramp will be provided for wheelchair users and those with push chairs. There will be site staff available to help people who need assistance.
