Newhaven: Tideway skiver faces fine

THE parent of a girl who failed to regularly attend Tideway School faces a fine of up to £2,500 or three months in jail if the youngsters does it again.

At Lewes Magistrates Court last week the Newhaven parent was conditionally discharged for one year and ordered to pay 60 costs to East Sussex County Council which brought the case.

Neither the child nor the parent can be named for legal reasons. In giving the conditional discharge magistrates explained that as long as the girl attended school regularly the parent would not need to return to court.

However, should the child not attend school the parent would be summoned and face a penalty for both offences.

An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: 'The county council s Education Welfare Service is continuing with its policy of prosecuting parents who do not fulfil their legal responsibilities regarding their children s attendance at school.

'The service is available to help parents and give guidance and support where necessary. However, if children remain out of school and parents continually fail to co-operate to resolve the problems, the legal option will be pursued.'
