The Co-operative store, in Newhaven Square, will shut its doors for the last time towards the end of February.

A spokesman for Newhaven Chamber of Commerce said: “We are saddened by the loss of another store from our long-suffering town.

“With no bank remaining, the loss of our only town centre supermarket will make it even harder for the remaining shops to make a living.

“The vicious circle caused when there are ‘no customers because there are few shops because there are no customers’ will only be exacerbated by the co-op closing it’s doors.

“The Chamber of Commerce will do what it can to entice a replacement retailer to take on the premises, but we feel it will be an uphill struggle, to put it mildly.”

It is thought the staff working at the supermarket will be made redundant.

“The decision to close the Newhaven Square store has been made as part of our ongoing store review process and is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment from the 30 colleagues working at the store.”
