COUNTRY MARKET: Newick Country Market will be open today, Friday, from 10am to 11am. There is a good selection of locally grown vegetables plus lots of homemade cakes, savoury items, fresh eggs, preserves, flowers and lovely greetings cards. You can also enjoy a cuppa.

CRICKET: This weekend is the commencement of the Saturday league fixture, so Newick first XI will travel to Lewes and play St Michaels II; the second XI will be playing at home against Pett, the third XI will pop over to Buxted Park. All games commence at 1.30pm. This Sunday’s friendly fixture is against Piltdown at home at 1pm. The under 14 junior match is on Tuesday at home against St Mathias at 6pm.

CHURCH SERVICES: Services at St Mary’s Church this weekend are Holy Communion at 8am followed by Holy Communion at 9.30am. Lifts to church are available by telephoning 711582 in advance.

DRAMA: Just to remind you of the play that the Newick Amateur Dramatic Society will be putting on in the village hall from Wednesday to Saturday, May 11 to 14, is The Ghost Train. Booking office 01825 722359 or 722958, also available from the Butchers or on the door.

AFTERNOON CLUB: Newick Afternoon Club will be holding their next meeting on Thursday in the Community Centre at 2.30pm. The speaker will be Diana Colvin, her subject, A Fascinating Insight into Village Life in Afghanistan. This sounds like a most interesting session. MEETING: ConfEUsed about the Brexit Referendum? Come to an open discussion with a panel of independent academic experts from the University of Sussex at Newick Village Hall on Wednesday May 18 from 7pm to 9pm. (Doors open 6.30pm). This event is hosted by the Sussex Branch of the European Movement (EM).
