Acting debuts: Newick Amateur Dramatic Society’s next production, The Ghost Train, will feature four people making their first appearances on the Village Hall stage. Claire Carter, who was the prompt for Newick’s December production, has decided to move in front of the curtain this time and will be joined by Olive Carter resulting in a mother and daughter stage-pairing. David Hayes is taking a break from the Buxted Players to join the cast, and Steve Clark recently retired and lives Chailey. In total there are eleven characters in the play.

The Ghost Train was written by Arnold Ridley, perhaps better known as Private Godfrey in the TV series, Dad’s Army. The play is set in the 1950’s and tells of a group of passengers who are stranded at a remote country station having missed their last connection. They resort to spending the night there although the station master urges them to leave and relates the story of a rail accident nearby which resulted in the station being haunted by a ghost train. Sure enough, the ghost train does go through and other apparitions materialise to provide an evening of comedy and suspense with a twist at the end in what Guardian critic, Alfred Hickling, has called ‘the greatest stage ghost story of all time’.
