Newsagent's memory lives in Kenyan project

THE bereaved wife of a well-known Sidley trader who died last month has thanked those who helped raise £1,000 at the funeral.

Keith Rickard, who spent 47 years as a newsagent, died on May 8 after an aneurism at the wheel in Pevensey Bay.

His wife Hazel, 71, of Riders Bolt, has spoken of the "overwhelming" support from the 200-odd people who attended his funeral in Hastings Crematorium.

Hazel said: "It was fantastic to see so many people there. Everyone said they had never been to a funeral like it. If Keith had been to one like that he would have said that's what I want for my own. It was amazing so many came to show respect."

Ex-Bexhill town mayor Stuart Earl was among those paying tribute to Keith during the service.

Instead of flowers, Hazel asked mourners to donate funds which she will send to LivingWay Children's Home in Naivasha, Kenya. She was "delighted" to collect 1,000, which she says will pay for a borehole at the site, providing water for around 40 orphans.

Hazel said that Keith, who had opted to donate his organs before he died, would have been happy with the funds going to the orphanage, which the family have supported for three years. We are friends with the trustees, and we know every penny goes to the children," she said. "His heart was always in Kenya.

"I'd like to thank everyone for their donations and support."
