NHS Trust ranked in top 20 for online training

EAST Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust has been named in the national top 20 for using online training courses and is the best in the South East region.

The Trust, which provides services at Bexhill Hospital, say online learning is considered to be an efficient and convenient way of training staff as it can be done in short manageable sessions fitted around working time commitments.

Staff traditionally underwent learning and development in a classroom environment but now a number of courses can be accessed online for both clinical and non-clinical staff.

The free courses are accessed via the National Learning Management System (NLMS), which is centrally funded by the Department of Health.

They have been developed using professional expertise and cover everything staff need to know.

The courses can be accessed at work or home and each individual's learning is automatically added to their learning and development record.

Moira Boyle, Learning and Development Advisor, said:

"Staff development is very important and we want it to be convenient and efficient as well as an excellent learning experience for staff.

"Online learning is more convenient for staff as they can work on small or large chunks of the modules at a time whenever it suits them. It also frees up the trainers to go out to the wards to give hands-on training to staff.

"We are also beginning to write our own material to make the learning specific to the trust, with manual handling and infection control for non-clinical staff the first that will be released."
