HOOE OPEN GROUP: The Hooe Open Group (Ladies Club) met on Friday, November 14. Their speaker was Laton Frewen who gave a detailed account of the life and death of Nurse Edith Cavell, who was executed by a German firing squad after being tried by Courts Marshal for assisting British and Allied soldiers escape from German occupied Belgium in 1915. She and her Belgian and French colleagues helped over 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium. She was arrested and tried with 33 others, found her guilty of ‘assisting men to escape’ and shot on October 12th 1915. It was interesting to learn of the great wave of feeling for this true heroin of the British Empire, whose memory is still commemorated in countries around the world. When her body was repatriated after the 1918 armistice. She was revered as a saint and her body was taken by train to Westminster Abbey to lay in State, today you can visit the carriage in which her body was transported from Dover to London, which has now been fully restored and is on view in the private railway sidings located at Bodiam Station. Edith Cavell is well known for her statement that “patriotism is not enough”. Her strong Angican beliefs propelled her to help all those who needed it, both German and Allied soldiers. She was quoted as saying, “I can’t stop while there are lives to be saved. 12 October was appointed for her commemoration in the Anglican Church calendar, although this is not a “saint’s feast day” in the traditional sense. Edith Cavell, who was 40 at the time of her execution, was already notable as a pioneer of modern nursing in Belgium. She was buried at Norwich Cathedral on the October 12, 1919, in a spot called Life’s Green. As the November meeting of the Hooe Open Group is the last general meeting of the year, it was an opportunity to mark the occasion by partaking of mince pies with the afternoon tea. December is the month when the club holds its Christmas luncheon at the Cooden Beach Golf Club, when guests are invited

CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING: St Mary’s are holding an Early Christmas Coffee Morning tomorrow, November 22, 10.30 a.m. - 12 noon. This will be held in the Reading Room, Church Lane Ninfield. There will be a variety of stalls including crafts, gifts, cards, cakes, produce, and books. There will also be a raffle, competitions and tombola too. You are invited to go along, take a friend and enjoy relaxing conversation over coffee, together with the opportunity to get some Christmas items.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in the villages tomorrow, November 22 at Hooe, opposite Denbigh Court, 1.50 p.m. - 2.35 p.m. Ninfield, Coombe shaw (off Manchester Road), 2.50 p.m. - 3.25 p.m. Ninfield, Downsview (off Church Lane), 3.40 p.m. - 4.05 p.m.

MESSY CHURCH: Ninfield Methodist are holding their ‘Messy Church’ on November 26, 3.30 - 5.30 p.m. All sorts of creative activities, a short celebration and a meal for children and parents together, for children aged 4-11 years (younger siblings also welcome); but each family must be accompanied by a parent or carer. The theme for their afternoon will be ‘LOVE IN A BOX. Every young person will be filling a shoe box with gifts that will then be taken to Romania for children before Christmas. ‘Computers for charities,’ based in Hailsham, will be the organisation that will be delivering the presents. COFFEE MORNING: Ninfield Working Men’s Club is holding a charity Christmas Coffee morning on November 29, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. There will also be a tabletop sale, raffle, bric-a-brac and mince pies. All are welcome, there is ample parking!

FIRST RESPONDERS: The Bexhill & District Community First Responders, who cover Bexhill, Ashburnham, Ninfield, Catsfield, Crowhurst, Hooe , Whydown & Normans Bay, will be meeting on Wednesday, December 3. NINFIELD PARISH COUNCIL: Ninfield Parish Council next meet on December 4, 7.15 p.m. at the Methodist Church Hall. All Ninfield residents are welcome to attend.

NINFIELD FLOWER GROUP: Ninfield Flower Group are next meeting on Friday, December 5, an the Memorial Hall, commencing at 7.30 p.m. They welcome the talented Craig Bullock, with his seasonal demonstration entitled “WINTER”. Tickets are £10.00 to include refreshments, and are available from Ellie Barron on 01424 893385. All flowers demonstrated are raffled at the end of the evening as well as the Flower Group Raffle. HOOE’S OLD MOTOR CLUB: It is some time since Hooe’s Old Motor Club show was held in August. The time has now come to distribute surplus funds raised on that day. Clubs and organisations in the area are invited to submit requests for money.
