Ninfield

Last weekend saw Lorna Tomasetti complete the 100 mile bike ride around London and the Surrey Hills in just under 8 hours! Currently her total raised for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital stands at over £1500, which Lorna is delighted about. Lorna would like to say a special thank you to the Village Stores who have been collecting sponsor money for her and also to all to her friends and family for all their support over the past four months. Hooe Open Group meet today Friday, August 9, at Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne. The members will take a 40 minute round the harbour trip on the “African Queen”. This will be followed by a Danish pastry tea at the nearby Simply Italian cafe. If you are interested in joining a group of very friendly ladies, why not drop in at Hooe Village Hall at 2.30pm on the second Friday of the month (Except August) or call Edna Wallis on 01424 842591.

Ninfield Bowls Club have played against clubs from all over the place this last week: July 31 they played Hawkhurst loosing 83-51. A 36 point lead saw them win against Hailsham in August 1. On August 3 they played against Ringmer but lost 90-53. Their final game of the week was against Herstomceux which resulted in a 66-66 draw.

Following the success of the Carnival and the excellent weather, Ninfield Local History Group had a record crowd visiting their marquee, and would like to thank all who added Names and memories of Ninfield Past for them. They really DO appreciate all these memories, as unless you tell them, they may be lost forever. The group’s Membership has been steadily increasing and now is too large to comfortably seat all who attend at the Reading Room. With much regret, as the Reading Room has an invaluable “cosy” atmosphere, they have decided that a move to the Methodist Hall is necessary. It has the added advantages of more seats (50); a disabled toilet and easier access for those amongst the group with walking difficulties who cannot quite manage the slope to the Reading Room. They have contacted their friends in the Hooe History Group, who have moved their own meeting date to allow attendance at each other’s meetings, and they will be warmly welcomed. They are having an Open Day Exhibition at the Memorial Hall from 11 am on Saturday, September 28, in order to showcase what has been accomplished in recording the many and varied aspects of Ninfield’s history. Although the History group are not meeting during August due to the summer and school holiday break, it doesn’t mean they’re doing nothing! They are working on various projects for the Exhibition as above and for the Centenary of World War One next year in harmony with a project with Ninfield School. It’s also the 70th Anniversary of D Day and more importantly in our area, of the V1 doodlebugs and V2 rocket attacks. Those with memories of the V1’s buzzing overhead will be very welcome! Also any aircraft crashes or other incidents of note.

Birch Holt Residential Home invite you to their Summer Garden Fete on August 17, 1-5pm. Along with craft, book, sweets and plant stalls, there will be a tombola and Grand Raffle. There will also be a ‘Guess the name of the caterpillar’ which has been made by the Birch Holt activities group. All are invited for a fun afternoon with all proceeds going to Age Uk and St Michaels Hospice.

Ninfield Horticultural Society’s Summer Show is on Saturday August 17 in the Memorial Hall. This is usually a big, colourful event with lots to see. The society would like to see as many entries as possible form the village, entry forms are available from the village post office. Ninfield Flower Group are holding a flower festival entitled “A Festival of Festivals”, August 24 - August 26. The festival will be held at Ninfield memorial Hall, 10.30am-5pm daily. Entry is £2/person with proceeds going towards The Sara Lee Trust along with a donation going to the Memorial Hall. There will be refreshments, a raffle, tombola, plant stall, crafts and other items. The group look forward to welcoming you.
