The Hooe Open Group (Ladies Club) held their monthly meeting last Friday, June 14, at Hooe Village Hall. This meeting took the form of a social get-together, giving an opportunity for members, both old and new to become better acquainted. The The group enjoyed cream teas, with homemade fruit scones, served with clotted cream and jam as well as a slice of lemon Madera cake. By the level of conversation, the meeting can be judged a success. At the end of the tea Edna Wallis, who is the club organiser, held an auction to sell off a number of (as new) items that had been donated by club members for the Bring & Buy Table, which had remained unsold. There was also the monthly 50pence raffle with six prizes, all of which had a value of over £5. There were three visitors, who all expressed their intention to become full members as they liked the warm and friendly atmosphere which is the “Hall Mark” of the Open Group. Next month on July 12, there is a demonstration of many different devices for home security, covering personal alarm systems, fire alarms and remote monitoring devices; this presentation is a must for anyone living alone. On Friday August 9, the members are booked to take a tour of Sovereign Harbour on the “African Queen” followed by tea and pastries at Simply Italian (Fingers crossed for fine weather). If you are interested in becoming a member of this friendly group of like minded ladies, telephone Edna Wallis on 01424 842591 who will be pleased to welcome you.

Ninfield Bowls Club should have played Polegrove team on Wednesday June 12 but as it was pouring with rain they had tea and a natter instead! Thursday June 13 saw them host a touring team from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire and had a really enjoyable afternoon although the weather could have been better. The score was 69 to Ninfield and 47 to Cheshunt. On Friday June 14, 6 members of the club (2 teams of 3 players) played in an Invitation match at Cross in Hand. Both teams lost 2 and won 1 match but, although neither team won, they all enjoyed the afternoon. They played at home on Saturday June 15 against Herstmonceux, winning a massive 120-59. The club were at home again on Sunday June 16 playing Bexhill. Unfortunately they lost 50-78. Also on Sunday, 3 members were due to play an invitation game at Staplecross however, due to illness, two members had to drop out. A substitute from Ninfield stepped in and a Staplecross member also played with our 2 members but Ninfield lost 2 games and won 1. But it is the taking part which matters!
