RIGHT ON CUE: A cold snap has arrived to confirm, absolutely, that we're now in the run up to Christmas. Twinkly lights, faux snow, sparkly reindeer are all in abundance and families with trollies stuffed with Festive Fayre are marching manfully round supermarkets. That's just Black Weekend, another Americanism that this country seems to have adopted. Be careful, see how Halloween has grown. But, if the USA's Thanksgiving celebrations of last weekend could be further promoted here, then maybe that would be a more welcome addition to our diaries. To say thank you, to be thankful, should be promoted, not forgotten, especially when so many people are constantly and tirelessly volunteering, raising money for charity, helping good causes all year and in such diverse ways, for big events as well as small ones. Children in Need's massive £47million on the night this year was just incredible, but, just as valuable and deserving of praise are all the local fundraisers giving time, providing support and raising much needed cash. Thank you to them and seasons' greetings.

WORKING MEN’S CLUB: Marj, Maureen and Yvonne would like to thank all who came and supported their coffee mornings this year, and donated/ bought items for the table sales. Money from these events, plus the 50p Table and the Jar on the Bar have helped the Club raise £1,695.69 so far for St Michaels Hospice Phoenix appeal. Fantastic. There will be a presentation evening in the club, early in the New Year, and until then more bits and bobs are needed for the next coffee morning. Marj, Maureen and Yvonne would especially like to thank the Ladies Craft Afternoon team who have made some lovely Christmas decorations, that made £69.70 for the charity. There are a lot of different activities within the club for people to come along to, the last Thursday afternoon of the month sees the doors open at 2pm for the Ladies Crafts but you can go just for a natter with a cuppa if you just fancy some company. Also, Monday afternoons from 2pm to 3pm you can join in the Sit, Stand and Move, light exercise class which is more for fun than ferocious fitness. The main thing is, that the Tin Hut, and it’s ladies and gentlemen on the committee, are always welcoming, ready for a chat, and happy to help when and where they can. Thank you.

FLOWER GROUP: Tonight, Friday, at the Memorial Hall starting at 7.30pm the group’s Seasonal Open Evening this year has a demonstration by the fabulous Ian Buxton entitled Christmassy. Tickets are £10 per head, to include all refreshments. If you haven’t booked a place already, then get to the hall in good time- you might be able to get a ticket on the door. All flowers will be raffled at the end of the evening.

COFFEE MORNING: St Mary’s Christmas Coffee Morning tomorrow, Saturday, from 10am to noon in the Reading Room, Church Lane. There will be a raffle and refreshments, and the organisers will be very grateful for any donations of small gifts for the bring and buy sale.

SEASONAL MARKETS: Saturday December 10, from 9am to 11am small local businesses and the team at the Blacksmiths are delighted to welcome everyone to the first of four seasonal markets to be held in the pub. There will be 16 or so stalls which will provide a mix of local produce and home made items including game meats, eggs, plants, veg, pies, puddings, cakes, crafts, confectionary and much more. The pub is a warm, welcoming meeting place with fabulous coffee and this first market is an ideal time to come and find some ideal Christmas fare and gifts. These markets are due to be held quarterly, with the dates next year starting on April 15 and they promise to be an exciting addition to the Village Diary. So please put this first one, December 10, on your calendar now. Landlord Jack wants funds raised at each event to be put towards a different local project each time, so not only a great chance for some local shopping, but also to help a local cause.

CATSFIELD: Sussex Harmony, Saturday December 10, from 3pm a West Gallery Carol Workshop, which precedes a Carol Concert with a difference at 7.30pm. At Catsfield Village Hall and the more the merrier. Bring an instrument, your voice, enthusiasm and a sense of humour. Call Mike Cooper on 892681 for more details.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Thanks to Rose for the following. The member’s Christmas Evening is on Monday December 12 at the Memorial hall from 7.30pm. The committee are planning some games and entertainments, and will provide drinks. Edible contributions will be gratefully received and very welcome that evening. Do go along, you might win a prize.

CAROL CONCERT: Tuesday December 13 at the Memorial Hall from 7pm. The Hooe Silver Band will play and there will be a performance from the youngsters of Ninfield Primary School Choir. Food and light refreshments will be available. This has become a very popular village evening and the atmosphere is just lovely. All funds raised on the night will go towards the next phase of the Hall’s refurb.

HEARING RESOURCE CENTRE: The mobile information unit, a registered charity supported by Adult Social Care and also known as the Hearing Bus, will be coming to Ninfield on Thursday December 15 and will be parked in the Blacksmiths Car Park from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The bus is accessible to wheelchair users, and there will be representatives on hand from ESCC and the Hearing Resource Centre to answer any questions, and provide individual information and advice. CHURCH EVENT: On Sunday at 3pm there will be a Lights of Love Thanksgiving and Remembrance Service which will be a combined event to include the Methodist Church, St Michaels Hospice and St Mary’s Parish Church, Ninfield. This will be held in St Mary’ s Church and will be followed at 4pm by the lighting of the Lights of Love Tree at the Methodist Church. This tree will remain throughout the Christmas season. Everyone is invited to join in the celebration of the lives of those who are still much loved, if no longer seen. Refreshments will be served in the Methodist Hall afterwards. Please take along your star or heart, and Lights of Love packs are available from the Lower Street Stores.
