Ninfield and Hooe village voice

They have raised £1000 for their chosen charity “Care For The Carers”, Young Carers in East Sussex. For their local project, £500 is going to Ninfield Memorial Hall, which is badly in need of funds for repairs & renovations. A new Charity will be chosen for this year and the next event will be a Christmas Coffee Morning and Table Sale (date to be arranged). They are always on the lookout for saleable items for their Table Sales, if you have anything suitable please ring Maureen on 892182 or Marge 892239 for collection.

The Hooe Open Group had a successful and interesting meeting on Friday September 14, after the speaker who was booked to present a fashion show, had to drop out at the last minute. Alan Stainsby came to the rescue, offering to provide a talk on the history of Bodiam Castle. Alan who is a noted local amerture historian gave an illustrated presentation of the present and past history of this picturesque ruin, now owned and maintained by the National Trust. The castle was built in 1385 by Sir Edward Dalynfrigge, who was a Knight of King Edward III. The castle was built to fortify the South Coast against a possible French invasion during the 100 Year War.

At the time, Sir Edward was one of the most influential people in the country and a member of what was called “The Free Company” who profited greatly by the pillage and plunder of French towns and villages, the money from which funded the building of Bodiam Castle. The next meeting of Hooe Open Group will be on Friday October 12 when there will be a demonstration, sponsored by the marketing department for Gruyere Cheese, where you will be able to taste and discover what this exceptional Swiss cheese can offer. If you are interested in joining the ladies of the Hooe Open Group, just turn up at 2.30pm at Hooe Village Hall on the second Friday of any month, where you will find a very welcoming group of ladies, together with their social organiser, Edna Wallison. Ninfield Bowls Club have been quite busy lately. Thursday September 13 they played Fairlight loosing 78-98, Sunday September 16 they played the Observer and won 63-59. Ninfield finished 3rd overall in the Rother League where there are 8 teams from our area involved. Well done team Ninfield! 3 members of the club attended the Ringmer Invitation day on September 9 and although they did not win had a great day. The McBeth Cup at the Polegrove held last Saturday had a number of teams entered. Ninfield’s team of men did not do too bad but their team of ladies came 3rd! This event is held each year and the charity was RNIB. Last Saturday, September 15, Ninfield held their finals day. The results are as follows: PRESIDENTS SHIELD - 1st Vic Lawrence runner up Brian Osborne. MENS SINGLES - 1st Norman McCubbin and runner up Mike Symes. LADIES SINGLES - 1st first Audrey Beale and runner up Jacqui Richards. PAIRS - 1st John Crittenden and Peggy Hammond and runners up Mike Symes and Margaret Crittenden. NOVICES - 1st Don Burton and runner up Sheila McCubbin and lastly 100 UP COMPETITION - 1st Brenda Haffenden and runner up Roger Bryant. Congratulations to you all! The club only have a few weeks remaining of play before the end of the season so lets hope that there are a few more wins.

Hooe Sports Football Club played Hollington Utd last Saturday drawing 2-2. This Saturday, September 29 is the local derby - Hooe against Ninfield in the ESFL Premier Division! Ninfield Local History Group are meeting on Thursday September 20. There will be a talk by John Cheshire entitled ‘What the Census Tells Us’. On Thursday October 18 a guest from Bexhill Museum will be talking about The Brassey Family. Everyone is welcome to the meetings. There is a charge of £1 for members and £2 for non-members to help cover the cost of refreshments and guest speakers. Annual membership costs £10. Ninfield Bonfire Society are holding their first Jumble Sale on September 29 at the Memorial Hall, Ninfield. Doors open at 2.00pm. Ninfield Methodist Church invite you to it’s special service on Back to Church Sunday, September 30, 2.30pm with Revd. Ian Wales.Back to Church Sunday is simple, its about inviting a friend back to church. Most of us know people who used to go to church but for a variety of reasons they have stopped going. Feedback suggests that many of these people would be open to an invitation to return… “I’ve been thinking about coming back to church….”. All visitors & friends are very welcome.

Ninfield Flower Group are meeting on October 1, 7.30pm at the Memorial Hall. This month they welcome Julie Brownlee with her demonstration entitled “Isn’t it Lovely”. All flowers demonstrated will be raffled at the end of the evening. Non members are welcome for a charge of £3.00 which includes refreshments.

Ninfield Carnival AGM. Please join the carnival committee on Wednesday October 10 at 8pm, in the Workingmen’s Club for their annual AGM.
