Ninfield & Hooe Village Voice - July 18

SCOUTS Jumble Sale: Doug wishes to thank everyone especially those who are not directly connected to Scouting who helped so much and contributed to the success of the Summer Jumble Sale when all help is much appreciated. The good news is £860 was raised, all of which will be spent to benefit our local scouts.

SWALLOWS: I met Diana at the Farmers Market when she was happy to tell me a second brood has been hatched in nest number one. This is really good news. The barn owls continue to be busy with their young. All this makes Diana smile more broadly than the rainfall figures even after the recent wet periods.

FARMERS MARKET: Last Saturday there were many tempting items on various stalls. As you walked through the entrance hall the stall there offered the most super looking cherries, tasting as good as they looked I understand. There was an excellent variety of foods, quality plants and a fascinating craft stall. Refreshments were also available. I hope to be told when the next market will be held. In addition to this I understand there are plans for future food markets in the Blacksmiths Inn car park. Further details when I have them.

HOOE OPEN GROUP: Members found the talk about the Friends of Bexhill Hospital most interesting. The hospital was created 70 years ago thanks to Jethro Arscott senior, Owen Arscott and Jethro Arscott junior. It initially cost 20,000.

From its conception fund raising activities were organised by a committee and were held until 1948, the birth of the National Health Service. The League of Friends continue to support the life of the hospital during which time many capable people have held the office of chairman, the post Stuart Earl is currently proud to hold.

The latest fund raiser was the Garden Party held on June 14 this year, it raised 4,000. For residents who wish to know more it is possible to arrange to donate 2 per annum to support the hospital, I hope to have more information soon.

Stuart was warmly thanked for his most enjoyable talk and invited to join the ladies for tea and biscuits. Next month the ladies will be going out to lunch. The speaker in September will be Jim Hoad. More details nearer the date.
