Ninfield Pram Race this Sunday

The legendary Ninfield Pram Race takes place this Sunday from 11.45-1.30pm as villagers throw themselves into what has become a major local event of the year.

The race starts as ever from the Blacksmiths Pub along Manchester Road but for the first time it is to be held on Sunday instead of Bank Holiday Monday so that everyone can enjoy fully without worrying about work next day.

There are four categories of races, each with a cash prize - the junior race for primary school age children, the senior race for youngsters at secondary school, the adult race, and finally the mixed race which is a fun one. There will also be a parish council sponsored race which will involve competitors attempting to race against the smiley face speed limit sign. Also adding to the fun will be a Fancy Dress competition which will have a cash prize of 40.

"It's a unique event," said secretary of Ninfield Carnival Committee Lorna Thomasetti.

"It's unbelieveable. People make their own go-carts and they go hurtling up the road...when they get to the end they have to down a pint of lager, or the children have to down squash, and then run back again. It is unique and very entertaining. I was there last year and there was a really nice atmosphere, there was a real buzz and a hum. Also there is a barbecue up there and a tuck shop.

"The Ninfield pram race has always been on the Bank Holiday Monday in the past, but people requested to change to the Sunday so they could enjoy themselves and have a good evening. The fun does continue into the evening - I think the Blacksmiths Pub is planning entertainment for the night - and people have always been aware they had work next day, but now they won't have to worry."
