'˜No gender pay gap' says council

The pay gap data from March 31 this year, shows the median geneder pay gap at the council is zero.

A council spokesman said: “The council, along with all public sector organisations and UK companies with more than 250 employees, has a legal requirement to publish gender pay gap information by April 2018.

“The calculations show that at March 31, the median pay gap, which compares the pay of the man and woman who are at the mid-point of the payroll, is zero.

“The council employed 278 women and 273 men. The average hourly pay for women was £14.61 and £14.85 for men. This gives a mean gender pay gap of 1.6 per cent.

“They also show that the proportion of men and women in each quarter of the pay structure is:

Lower quartile – women 39.1 per cent, men 60.9 per cent

Lower middle quartile – women 62.8 per cent, men 37.2 per cent

Upper middle quartile – women 54.5 per cent, men 45.7 per cent

Upper quartile – women 45.7 per cent, men 54.5 per cent

“The UK gender pay gap is 18.1 per cent for all workers, or 9.4 per cent per cent for full-time staff.”

Councillor Andrew Skudder, cabinet member for Resources, said: “We take equalities seriously so I’m pleased to see that these figures reflect our intentions.

“As a local authority it’s important we set an example to other organisations; this includes equalities as well as paying all our staff the Living Wage.”
