No-parkingplan for nineAldwick roads

Metres of double yellow lines are being proposed along Aldwick's roads to improve safety.

West Sussex County Council wants to paint the no parking measures on nine streets in the parish.

The council's highways officers have said the parking bans should be imposed in sections of Aldwick Gardens, Fish Lane, High Trees, Parkfield Avenue, Princess Avenue, Selsey Avenue, The Drive, Wessex Avenue and West Avenue.

A statement by the officials with the plans says the idea of the proposals is to '˜improve safety at various junctions and to improve traffic flow by prohibiting parking at locations where parked vehicles cause obstructions'.

'This order is proposed at the request of local residents and Aldwick Parish Council so as to alleviate danger to persons or other traffic using the roads or for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising and to facilitate the passage of traffic,' it adds.

But Fish Lane resident Tim Hart, who has lived there since 1981, said the parked vehicles along kerbsides in between the existing double yellow lines acted as a safety measure.

'They slow down the traffic. The vehicles make people more cautious and careful. I don't think the cars parked along Fish Lane are a major issue at all to motorists.

'They may have to slow down a bit but you don't tend to get queues there because the road is wide enough for three cars.

'If you get a clear road in Fish Lane, drivers are able to speed along it.

Putting down double yellow lines is likely to make the road less safe,' he commented.

Affected residents have until August 2 to comment on the measures before the county council makes a final decision.
