A Bellbrook Service Station worker activated a ‘smoke cloak’ burglar alarm by accident on December 4, rousing the Uckfield firecrew.
Firefighters faced a more serious challenge from December 6 onwards when they were summoned to Newhaven to support county-wide crews dealing with a fire affecting tons of compacted rubbish. The town’s 24,000 litre bulk water carrier - refilled from the Ouse - provided water at the scene for five days. On December 7 an Uckfield appliance was sent to the third day of the Newhaven incident and colleagues dealt with a chimney fire at a house in Selby Road.
On December 8 teams from Uckfield and Crowborough helped free a seriously-injured 4X4 vehicle driver after a road crash on the A26 near Crowborough. The air ambulance attended. Crews also dealt with a chimney fire at Halland, an electrical fire in a heater on the Manor Park estate and then dismantled fencing to help a muddy dog escape from under decking at a house in Snatts Road.
