No-win situation for Rother over holiday waste leaflets

EACH leaflet sent to Rother taxpayers advising them of the Christmas and New Year waste collection arrangements has cost them 84p.

The figure has been revealed by Rother leader Cllr Carl Maynard in response to questions from a taxpayer "aghast" at the cost implications.

Ironically, the leader says Rother opted to post the leaflets because of the controversy caused when it attempted to publicise the June launch of its kerbside recycling scheme and a mail delivery company failed to get the message to many homes.

The questioner asked: "Having received such a huge: Love Rother Love Recycling leaflet I am aghast at what this publication might have cost the ratepayers, not to mention the cost in energy. I have three questions:

1. How much did envirocomms receive for the years: 2006-7

2. Anticipated spend for years 2007-8

3. Cost of recent publication including postage"

The leader said: "The only way to communicate directly with all households across the district is to post a publication direct to every household.

"Our experience earlier this year using a mail delivery company (commonly used to deliver telephone directories and other publications) did not prove successful and a high number of households, particularly in our most rural areas were missed.

"This caused great concern and distress for the numbers of people who were not informed about the new recycling services.

"The total payment made by the Council to Envirocomms in 2006/07 was 158,066. The anticipated expenditure for 2007/08 is 160,000.

"The cost per newsletter including postage is 84 pence."
