Nominations open for procession leader at Shoreham beach bonfire night

Shoreham Bonfire Society are looking for a child under the age of 12 to take on two important roles at this year's beach bonfire and firework night.

The child will lead the procession and start the firework countdown at the event on Saturday, November 12.

Nominations are now open and the winner will be drawn randomly from all the nominations received between now and 4pm on Friday, November 11.

Jonathan Marshall of the Shoreham Bonfire Society said: “The firework countdown is always one of the highlights of the night and as the winner will also be leading our procession it makes it an even more special prize.”

The nominated child must be under 12 years old and must be available on the evening of November 12 with a parent or guardian.

Mr Marshall said: “The name of the winner will be published on the Shoreham Bonfire Fireworks Facebook page after 5pm on Friday, November 11.

“We will try and contact the winner as soon as draw is made. If no response is received from the winners, another name will be drawn.”

The procession, which will leave beach green at 6.30pm, will feature the Beach Bateria Samba band, 
There will be a large beach bonfire on Shoreham beach, which will be lit by 7pm, and a professionally managed fireworks display at 7.15pm.

Children will be able to have their face painted and sparkle in temporary glitter tattoos, as well as enjoy games and rides, and a selection of food and drink will be on offer.

The fireworks will be followed by live performances by young musician group, the Shoreham Allstars.

The event will raise funds for the Chestnut Tree House charity, a children’s hospice, and other community groups.

Collection buckets will be passed around by the Third Shoreham Sea Scouts.

Last year, a total of £2000 was raised – £1,000 went to the Chestnut Tree House and £200 went to five local community groups each.

Subject to call outs, the HM Coastguard and fire service teams will join in the fun.

Mr Marshall said: “Last year we had good weather, a wonderful turn out and raised £2000 for charity and local community groups.

“We hope for more of the same in 2016!

“We are thankful to the community for supporting the event each year and hope that they will give generously again so that we can give even more to charity.”
