Bowls is suitable for all ages and genders and Northiam BC welcomes new members and offers free taster sessions. If you would like to give it a try, you just need some flat shoes (trainers are fine) and you can book a taster session by phoning Trevor on 01797 252307 or just turn up on a Monday night from 5.30pm. Northiam is a friendly club suitable for either social or competitive bowls, so why not give it a go?

Over 60s: The author, Melanie Jones, will be speaking to the Over 60s this week – in the Village Hall at 2pm on Tuesday.

Coffee Stop: Call into the Church Centre on Wednesday mornings for coffee and a chat at Coffee Stop, between 10 and 12 noon.

WI: It’s Resolutions time again for the Women’s Institute. Unusually, this year there will be two resolutions to consider for the annual conference in Brighton. The first is for carers to be allowed to stay in hospital with sufferers of Alzheimer’s disease and the second resolution is to call on supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, passing surplus food on to charities and thus helping to address the problem of food poverty in the UK. Both resolutions will, I’m sure produce some interesting discussions.

Also, at the May meeting, some of the aprons which the craft group have been making will be on sale at a reasonable £5. Crafty activities will continue by making shopping bags.

The WI meets in the Jenkins Room of the Village hall at 2pm on the first Wednesday of every month.

Police Election: Thursday Seniors make way for the Village Hall to be used as a polling booth on Thursday – this time for the Police Commissioner. I can’t say I’ve seen any information so far – but a quick glance at Rother’s website informs me that there are five candidates: Katy Bourne (Conservative Party), James Doyle (Green Party), Michael Jones (Labour Party), Patrick Lowe (UKIP), James Walsh (Liberal Democrats), and a link on the website leads to their policy statements.

Dance Club: Friday night is dance night, and if you fancy an evening sequence dancing with a friendly group of people, do pop into the Village Hall and see what’s on offer. The Club runs 7-10pm with a break for tea.

Plant Sale: Northiam Horticultural Society will be holding their Plant Sale in Northiam Village Hall on Saturday, 7th May at 2pm. There will be 1000+ plants grown by Great Dixter and Society members including perennials, annuals, herbs and vegetables. If you have any space at all in your garden, this is the place to find the right plant to fit. Most of us have been known to buy even when we have no space, as they are all so tempting!!

Quiz: The Bonfire Society’s Quiz on Saturday 7th May is now fully booked, and will start at 7.30pm. Once again we will be selling beer from Rother Valley Brewery, and usingthe now famous “drinks” placards.

Looking to June: Best not to make any plans to go away in June – May is busy in the village, but we’re really going for it in June!! A large number of us enjoyed celebrating the Queen’s birthday on Thursday, with torches, drums, beacon and fireworks, and we reconvene for the weekend of June 11th, with a dance and a barbeque as part of the national celebration, and then the next weekend (18th) is the third Bonfire Festival, with Red Diesel headlining the music, but local talent is welcome to contact Geoff Piper to book a slot at the microphone. The Blue Cross will be holding their annual fete the week afterwards. Let’s hope for a run of sunny weather!

Church Services (24th): St Mary’s: 8am Holy Communion, 10.30am Holy Communion St Teresa’s: 9am Mass
