Badminton: We are fortunate to have a superb facility in the Pretious Sports Hall providing two badminton courts. A thriving junior club is run by Pete Thomson (07815 84517), with three graded sessions on a Friday evening, starting at 5.30pm. This is followed by the adult club at 8.15pm, which is run as a drop-in session, contact Karen Ayling (01797 253375). A further drop-in club is run by Sue Clark (016797 253428) on a Monday for one hour from 5.45pm. New members or visitors are welcome at both adult clubs which welcome all levels of player (that’s the advantage of two courts). The junior club operates a grading system to put you into the right group.

Boot Fair Safari: Hawkhurst are trying a new idea this Saturday - a Boot Fair Safari! Pick up a route map from the League of Friends shop on the Colonnade, and then tour Hawkhurst to shop at your leisure from garages, drives and gardens around the village. 10am to 2pm, and you couold pick up a bargain.

Quiz: The Village Hall Trust are holding a Quiz Night on Saturday at 7pm. If you haven’t booked yet, please contact Helen 252152. Teams are of 8 people, at a cost of £7 a head, to include a ploughmans.

Streetstyle Dance: There are two dance classes on Tuesday, at 6pm and 7pm in the Pretious Sports Hall. Call in to find out more, or the Hall is on 252297.

Alpha Course: An Apha Course – an introduction to Christianity – will be starting on Tuesday 22nd at 7.30pm in the Church Centre. The course lasts for 10 weeks, and the first session includes an informal meal together, followed by an introductory DVD entitled: Is there more to life than this? Please contact Rod White (253118) to find out more or to book your place. All welcome – there is no charge, and honest debate is welcomed!

Coffee Stop: Each Wednesday, Coffee Stop opens between 10am and noon in the Church Centre. This week, our PCSO, Becky Unicombe, will be there from 11am to chat and find out if there are any police-related matters she can help with.

Macmillan: The annual Macmillan Coffee Morning has quickly become a popular date in the calendar, so I hope you will be able to support the one being held in the Church Centre on Friday 25th September 10am – 1pm. Many people locally have benefitted from Macmillan’s nursing support, and they need all the money they can raise to continue this vital, friendly service. If you can’t stay, they will be happy to take donations for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Another Quiz: Next Saturday (26th) the Conservative Association will be holding their quiz in Beckley Village Centre, 7 for 7.30pm, £7 with ploughmans. Book with Zai (260677) or Sue (252503).

Charity Line Dance: There will be a Charity Line Dance on Saturday October 3rd in Northiam Village Hall in aid of Rhys. If you would like to find out more about this little boy and his condition – take a look on Northiam & Nearby Facebook page. Money is needed to help him to be able to live at home, as he has a tracheostomy and ventilator. Tickets are £5, and there will be tea/coffee/cake at £1.50. The Dance will be between 2.30 – 5pm – please contact

Beckley Players: Anyone for Murder? A comedy thriller by Brian Clemens and Dennis Spooner will be staged in Beckley Village Centre in October. Tickets are on sale from Keith or Carol Hunt 01797 260898. The opening Gala Night on Wednesday 7th and tickets are £10 including cheese and wine. Friday is Theatre Supper Night, costing £15 and including a 3 course meal! And if you just want the play, then Thursday and Saturday are £7. The play starts at 7.30pm, supper at 7pm. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment!

St Michaels Hospice: For as long as I can remember, Northiam has held two fantastic Coffee Mornings each year, raising funds for St Michael’s Hospice. All three of the current organising team are moving out of the village, so we need some more volunteers to take this on. If you feel you could help in this way, you would be carrying on a much needed tradition, and you will find willing helpers and supporters. Please call Eileen Hayes (252871), who can tell you what is involved.

Cub Scouts: The Cub Scout group is currently suspended, as we haven’t got a leader. If anyone could take on this role, you would be doing a very worthwhile and enjoyable thing. Jacky Broad would love to hear from you if you would consider this. As she says, Cub Scout Leading / Scout leading is a rewarding occupation, giving the opportunity to learn and pass on life skills and Scouting values to young people.

We also have options with the Northiam Group for volunteers working both with the young people and helping out supporting the Group by being a member of the Committee. The duties are not onerous and our meetings often only 6 in a year. They are brief but it is important as we are a Charity in our own right and have a duty to maintain proper accounting etc to the Charities Commission.
