Congratulations!: We were all thrilled to hear that Peter Hayman was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list. Peter has served Northiam tirelessly over the years, and this recognition is justly awarded. He was one of the first people I met in the village, and his enthusiastic welcome was probably the main reason I threw myself into local activities. Not only has Peter done so much - on the Parish Council, Village Hall committee and as Church Warden - but he is always so encouraging of others. Congratulations!

Open Studios: South East Open Studios ends this weekend, and Terry will be opening The White House Studio in Dixter Road on Friday and Sunday 10am - 5.30pm.

Badminton: Although the season has finished, badminton is such a good way to keep fit that our clubs continue through the summer. Clubs meet on Fridays in the Pretious Sports Hall – Juniors from 5.30pm (please call Pete Thomson 07815 842517 to check whether there are any spaces). Adults meet at 8.30pm on Fridays and 5.45pm on Mondays, and both adult clubs will be pleased to see new faces – just turn up.

Midsummer Festival: Can we really have reached the mid-point of the year? Well, let’s celebrate with a Festival! The Bonfire Society will be running this year’s Festival on Saturday, from 11am on the Playing Fields, with live music all day. As well as all the traditional attractions, such as falconry and the climbing wall, there will be the Craft Fayre, a fun Dog Show, a Beer Festival of local beers and ciders and the famous Bonfire BBQ.

Boot Fair: There will be a Boot Fair on the Playing Fields on Sunday 21st June, starting at the civilised time of 11am! So if you would like to have a clear-out but hate those early morning starts, this is the one for you! Pitches are £10 on the day. [email protected] 01797 253798.

Rabbit & Cavy: Sunday is Show Day in the Village Hall for the rabbit and cavy club.

Coffee Stop: Pop into the Church Centre on Wednesday mornings to catch up with the news. Coffee Stop is open from 10-12.

Seniors’ Club: All pensioners are welcome to the Club which meets each Thursday in Northiam Village Hall. There is always plenty to do and chat about, and whilst everyone arrives about 10.30, there is tea and coffee and the chance to take a look at the bring and buy stall, or the bring and win raffle. After extend chair exercises to improve mobility, members are served a two course home-cooked lunch followed by the week’s entertainment – this week, it’s Ken and Mark with song and keyboard. All for £7. If you would like to join, or know someone who would, please contact Jane (252973) or Linda (252283) who can also arrange for transport if necessary.

Horticultural Society: The Show schedule for the Horticultural Society’s Summer Social is accessibly short – your favourite flower (up to 3 cut stems of the same type), interesting foliage (up to 3 cut stems of the same type, or different) and your favourite photograph. I’m sure we can all manage at least one of those!

Entries should be taken to the Village Hall between 7 and 7.30pm on Friday (26th). Along with wine and nibbles, there will be two quizzes and a plant identifying competition, followed by an informal question and answer session with Fergus, Tony and two Dixter students, before the prizes are awarded, and the evening ends about 9.30pm.

Conservation: The Telephone Box on the bottom of Dixter Road has just been being painted and cleaned, and the Conservation Society will soon be carrying out its annual painting of some of the benches in the village to ensure they are clean and tidy. Mervyn has cleared the weeds and brambles from around the bench near the bus stop on the triangle so that people can sit down waiting for the bus, now we need to look to the rest of the village!

If there is a bench near you that needs some TLC contact Mervyn (253443) or if you would like to help he can supply the materials (paint, stain etc). It is up to US to keep our village looking good – and I vote for people to stop parking on the verges!
