Northiam is all setto burn bright forbonfire celebration

NORTHIAM plays host to a night of fiery revelry on Saturday when the newly formed bonfire society holds its first ever event.

The Northiam Society, with members dressed in distinctive highwayman costumes, will be joined by societies from across Sussex including Rye, Battle, Robertsbridge, Staplecross, and Hastings as well as drumming groups.

The main A28 through the village will be closed between 6.30pm - 10.30pm, with diversions via Beckley, Clay Hill and Horns Cross.

The torch-lit procession will set off from Beales Lane at 7pm and end at the Bonfire Field at the playing fields.

Entry to the bonfire and fireworks site is £1. The bonfire will be lit at 8.30pm with a spectacular fireworks display at 9pm.

There will be food and other attractions on the site and Will’s Bakery on Main Street will be staying open for the evening.

Local people are being asked not to park their vehicles along the procession route on the night.

Visiting societies will meet at the Muddy Duck pub on Main Street.

Collectors along the route will be rattling buckets in aid of three charities this year – Northiam Pre-school, Northiam Scouts and Frewen College.

The procession can be noisy, so people take precautions with animals and young children.

It will be the first time since the 1950’s that Northiam has held a traditional Sussex bonfire event with torches.

The Society was set up by a small group of enthusiasts and has grown in size. It has been busy working hard to raise funds by holding regular quiz nights and other events at it’s Muddy Duck headquarters.

They have had support from companies such as Jempsons at Peasmarsh, who made a donation from its community fund.

No fireworks should be brought onto the fire site.
