Northiam to ignitethe start of bonfireseason on Saturday

Northiam is set to get the bonfire season of to a blazing start on Saturday.

A change from being the last event on the local bonfire calendar to the first one this year should guarantee agreeable weather for the event.

Northiam Bonfire Society will lead a torchlit procession along Main Street dressed in their distinctive highwaymen costumes.

They will be joined by bonfire societies and drumming groups from across Sussex including Hastings and nearby Rye.

The procession ends on the bonfire field where there will be a bonfire and fireworks display.

Main Street will be closed to traffic from 6.30pm and the bonfire field will be open from 6pm and has a licensed bar.

The bonfire society have been working tirelessly through the year to raise funds for the event and have had support from local business Jempsons.

Money raised from collections on the night will help good local causes including the fund set up in memory of Mary Shipstone.

Rye holds its bonfire celebrations on Saturday November 8.
