This evening (Friday) is the Conservation Society’s AGM, with Miss Victoria Williams giving an update on the Conservation work at Great Dixter. If you heard Miss Williams last year, you will be keen to hear her again, it’s a great treat to hear someone so expert in her field with such an enthusiasm for her job. And if that isn’t enough to tempt you, there will be a glass of wine and some nibbles to fortify you! If you aren’t yet a member, please do come along and meet other people who want to preserve the best in our village. For the princely annual fee of £2 you can help to make a difference.

You will have been asked to give to Christian Aid this week, when volunteers have collected door to door, and the week comes to an end with a Coffee Morning in the Church Centre on Saturday, from 10am until 12 noon. There will be coffee and teas, cakes, bric-a-brac and a raffle, with a wonderful plant stall just along the road at The Byre House. Please come along and support this essential work – parking in the surgery car park.

Beckley village and school have compiled a Jubilee Cookbook to raise funds for a new village clock to commemorate the Jubilee. There will be a taste the cookbook session in Beckley Village Hall on Saturday, beginning at 7.30pm (free entry). Everyone is very welcome to come along and sample some of the recipes and enjoy and interesting talk/slide show on the history of Beckley School which is approaching 200 years old. The cookbook is on sale at Northiam Dental Practice.

PC Collins will be attending Coffee Stop at 11am this week to meet any resident who would like to discuss any issues or concerns. Coffee Stop is held in the Church Centre every Wednesday between 10am and 12 noon, everyone is very welcome.

Joanne Harper will be advising members of the Thursday Seniors’ Club on what to do when the television digital switchover takes place in two stages on 30th May and 13th June. I have tried to read the booklet, but I am just hoping that someone else will sort it out for me – so perhaps I will be calling on members of the club for help!! I just hope the television is better than the radio which is constantly breaking up! Ah well, progress!

However, you may have seen that two of the prizes on offer in the Jubilee Raffle are Freeview boxes from Telemast, so buy your tickets now! Local shops are kindly supporting the Jubilee by selling raffle tickets and donating fabulous prizes – we have a piece of decorative wall art from the DIY, rose bushes from The Old Rose Nursery, an MOT from BECRA, vouchers to all our local establishments, some high value shopping vouchers and many, many more. Prizes are being added to the list as they are donated, so some of the more interesting ones may be lower down on the list, but you don’t want to miss the chance to win some really good prizes.

Next Saturday (26th), there will be a Coffee Morning in aid of St Michael’s Hospice in the Village Hall 10am – 12 noon. As you may be aware, this year St Michael’s celebrated 25 years of invaluable service to the community, having served an astonishing 12,500 people with specialist palliative care in that time. Your support is needed to carry on this work.

In the evening, there will be a Bingo Night starting at 7pm. Entry is free but you have to bring a donation which can be used a prize – bottle of wine, box of chocolates etc. Books are £6, or £10 for two, bring your own drinks and nibbles. All proceeds to Northiam Nursery and Beckley pre-school. Call Kath 01797 260609 for further information.

I hope you have received a leaflet detailing all the plans for Northiam’s celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee. Please ensure that you register children 12 and under for the commemorative mug, and perhaps you would like to encourage them to make a fancy dress costume using red, white and blue.

The Jubilee Dance will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd June, and will feature the Starrlite Beatles and local talent. Music will span the decades, so there should be something for everyone, and if you would like to dress for your favourite decade, you may win a prize! Entry is £2 on the door, and visitors are very welcome.
