Not a bad hair day, simply raising funds for charity....

Udimore student Giles Hart is to embark on a once in a lifetime opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as part of a team that hopes to raise £200,000 for a children's charity - even if it means dying his hair pink in the process.

Giles, 19, and a team of students from the University of Nottingham will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in early September. Giles says he’s looking forward to the challenge. “I am studying for my degree in Design Engineering at the University of Nottingham and, this summer, me and my contemporaries in the University Charity Society- Karnival plan to climb Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, raising money for ‘Hope for Children’.”

Giles says Hope for Children, whose work is categorised into 3 themes: education, health and family empowerment, work tirelessly to help vulnerable children reach their full potential. “Last year alone they helped 47,000 children in Africa, Asia and the UK. They passionately believe every child has the right to a happy, safe and fulfilling childhood. It’s a fantastic charity.”

Giles says the trip to Tanzania and the climb up the highest mountain in Africa (estimated to be 5,895 metres; 19,341ft) will take two weeks. “The walk up Mount Kilimanjaro alone is six days. On our way we will be introduced to some of the children our fund raising efforts have managed to directly support. It’s amazing to be connected first-hand to the vulnerable children we’ve sought out to help and makes the trip all the more rewarding and overwhelming.”

Giles is fast becoming a seasoned fundraiser. In June last year Giles, and a group of friends, completed the Three Peaks challenge in 24 hours raising over £6,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Trust and the Uganda Charity Trust Fund. He says he’s hoping to surpass his target for the Kilimanjaro climb. “I have already raised over £1,800 from friends and family and I am actively fundraising amongst local businesses and hope they will sponsor me and allowing me to exceed my £3,000 target.

“All the participants are undertaking fundraising activities and we hope to raise over £200,000.”

Recently Giles bleached his hair white and used pink hair dye to raise funds in the Nottingham area. “As you can see from the photo it looks absolutely ridiculous and event went bright orange! However I was more than happy to put my hair through this for such a good cause!”
