Nursing home residents complete sponsored walk

RESIDENTS of a Worthing care home completed a lengthy seafront walk on Saturday to raise awareness of dementia.

A total of 40 residents and staff of the Hurst nursing home, in Mill Road, Worthing, took part in the walk, in conjunction with National Dementia Awareness Week.

They trekked from George V Avenue to Splash Point and back, a journey of over three miles.

They have raised nearly £400 in the process so far.

Resident Charles Britten, 92, who managed to walk the whole way, said: “It has been hard work practising for this but I am really proud to have to have done it.”

Fellow resident Evelyn Hope, 95, added: “It was a great day out and we really enjoyed taking part and being able to raise money for such a good and needy cause.”

The event was organised by the home’s manager, Olga Beresford-Theurer.

She said: “This was a real challenge for some of our residents, due to their limited mobility and health conditions and they and our staff had their work cut out completing the route.”

National Dementia Awareness Week runs from May 18 to 22.
