Nursing staff awarded for Chris Leppard's care

Nurses who cared for Chris Leppard at the Conquest Hospital have won a staff award.

Staff on the Newington Ward worked extremely hard to ensure Chris, who suffered from the rare Prader-Willi syndrome, received the best possible care.

The condition gives sufferers an insatiable appetite as they can never tell when their stomachs are full.

Jayne Cannon, clinical matron who nominated the Newington team, said: "The ward has recently coped exceptionally well with a very challenging situation. The staff worked hard and showed professionalism, dedication and team spirit.

"Despite the challenges posed, the staff were still able to smile. They are a fantastic team and I'm very proud of them."

Chris died from serious complications associated with his weight on May 15.

Emma Jones-Davies, medical devices educator at the Conquest, said: "The team on Newington worked incredibly hard and gave heart and soul to provide the highest standards of care possible to a young patient despite the numerous challenges this presented.

"They should be commended for their efforts to maintain the quality of care to all their other poorly patients on the ward at the time. Their efforts should be applauded."
