Objections to homes scheme

Objections have been raised by West Sussex County Council to plans to replace Yapton businesses with homes.

The council's planning officers have said the scheme by Gladedale Group Ltd should be stopped.

The developer wants to demolish the current buildings on the Yapton Industrial Estate in Bilsham Road and build 59 homes in their place.

But the county council has told Arun District Council, which will make the final decision, that it is opposed to the scheme.

Two reasons of conflict with the county's land use strategy are given for the opposition. One is that the site lies outside the built up boundary and any development in such an area should be restricted to essential uses.

The other concerns the fact the land is not allocated for residential use.

The county council's decision was made public yesterday.

Arun had received 62 letters of objection to Gladedale's proposals by the end of the public consultation period last Thursday.

No letters of support were received.

Gladedale intends to build a mixture of two and three bedroom properties on the land next to The Lamb pub. They will consist of terraced, semi-detached and some townhouses.

Each house will have its own car parking within the site.

About 25 per cent of the land is occupied by small industrial units used by three companies and about 20 workers. The rest of the site is agricultural land.

No date has yet been set by Arun for a final decision about the application to be made.
