OFF duty Newhaven fire fighters helped a man in distress straight after tackling a fire at Co-operative Funeral Care on Sunday June 26.

Red watch fire fighters Tom Harvey and Rickie Botwright called upon their first aid skills to help a man who was having a fit in the street as they were on their way home.

Watch manager Phil Swallow said: “Obviously they had just finished working hard at an incident and it just shows they are never off duty and always there to help.

“They came across a man who was having a fit on the pavement and they protected him to make sure he didn’t injure himself any further and didn’t fall into the road.

“They also waited with him and called for an ambulance.”

The young man’s fit did not stop until the ambulance arrived.

One of the fire-fighters put his fire brigade shirt under the man’s head to protect him as well as monitoring him to keep him safe along the main A259.
